Nicolette (Nikki) Thomas has been volunteering at our Brynmawr shop for three months

Nikki had this to say about become a Hospice of the Valleys Volunteer

What were your reasons for wanting to volunteer in one of our charity shops?

“I had been looking at volunteering for a while and met the volunteer manager Gavin at a local event. The role of ‘retail assistant’ was interesting for me as I wanted to learn new skills, meet new people and to get out of the house more.

I would like to open my own local bakery in Brynmawr and volunteering with the Hospice (of the Valleys) has given me the confidence to look into starting my own business.”

What new skills have you learnt and how have you used them?

I have learnt lots since being here, after I finished my induction and training, I could work the till, knew how to set up the float, could price the various items that got brought in as donations and how to cash-up the till at the end of the day too. I also know how to get a donation we receive from the supporter bringing it into the shop and on the to the shop floor in the best condition possible and where possible, maximizing the income the charity gets with asking about gift-aid.”

What has it been like volunteering in the charity shop?

“I already knew one volunteer, Christine, who also volunteers in the Brynmawr shop, so she said it was a great atmosphere to be around. I have met loads of new people and gained confidence in talking to people I didn’t already know. I have even been able to go home and speak to my partner & family about my day and being in a different environment has done my well-being great.”

Would you recommend volunteering and with the Hospice of the Valleys?

“Volunteering has brought me out of my shell and given me a bit more confidence to explore the next stage of my life. I would recommend volunteering to learn new skills, meet new people and improve your wellbeing by being a team player and part of a community”
