Meet Cheryl Cross, a devoted supporter of Hospice of the Valleys, whose passion for fundraising began after her beloved dad, Darryl, received the care and support of the Hospice during his final days.

“When Dad was diagnosed in early January 2021 with terminal oesophageal cancer, the Hospice became our lifeline,” Cheryl shares. “They were there for Dad and supported us as a family. They were compassionate, engaging, and truly invaluable. They also provided practical help to ensure things were in place for Mam and offered much-needed guidance.”

Although Darryl only received hospice care for a short time—he sadly passed away on March 1st, 2021—Cheryl was deeply moved by the support they received. Determined to give back, she began an incredible journey of fundraising to help ensure other families in the community receive the same care and compassion.

Cheryl has since taken part in a wide range of Hospice and third-party events, including the Six Mile Race, half marathons, the Hospice Extra Mile Challenge, Light Up A Life, Welsh and National Three Peaks, Paws 4 Patients, and many more initiatives.

Her most recent and most iconic challenge was the TCS London Marathon, which she absolutely smashed in 5 hours 37 mins! With her family and friends cheering her on, Cheryl dedicated each mile to a loved one, carrying their memories—and especially her dad’s—with her every step of the way.

To date, Cheryl has raised £3,751 through her London Marathon challenge, and an astounding total of over £10,600 since her fundraising journey began in 2021. Her dedication, strength, and compassion make her a true local hero.

Thanks to Cheryl, and the generous support from amazing businesses and kind individuals, our clinical teams can continue to be there for patients and loved ones when they need us most.

Thank you, Cheryl. You are an inspiration.
