This is Lilly-Jo, she is 10 years old and this will be her 4th year taking part in the Big Stay Awake. Lilly now see’s this as an annual occurrence and once New Year has passed asks when the stay awake challenge is.
Lilly takes part in the Big Stay Awake with her Auntie Rach. Rachel is the Manager of the Hospice at Home Service; she manages the Health Care Support Workers who support patients and their families by night. Her reason for taking part is to shine a light on the fantastic work of her team who sit with patients who are at the end of their life and provide emotional support and respite for their family members.
So after 3 years and thanks to the advice of some of the healthcare assistants Lilly and Rachel have some advice to keep you going through the night for all those taking part:
- Have plenty of snacks. One of the Health Care Assistants always has a selection of goodies with her to get her through the night.
- Make sure you keep hydrated.
- Plan activities that you know will keep you awake such as:
- Board games
- Arts and Crafts
- Computer games
- Music and dancing
- Hold a competition such as a board game champion or Best Craft item.
- Move around if you feel yourself getting tired.
- Don’t lie down and stay away from any blankets – that will encourage you to fall asleep then.
So, Lilly’s plans for this year a horse themed night!!
